Here are Five Tips to Supporting your Immune System and Staying Healthy during the Cold and
Flu Season.
- Eat a Balanced and Nutritious Diet: Consume a whole foods diet balanced in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, nuts, seeds and lean meats to provide your body with essential vitamins, such as vitamins A, C, E, and Beta-carotene, minerals, such as zinc and selenium, and protein to support your immune system.
- Get at least 7 Hours of Sleep: Studies show that during deep sleep potent immune-enhancing compounds are released, and many immune functions are greatly increased.
- Decompress from your Stress: Stress increases hormones, adrenaline and corticosteroids that inhibit white blood cell formation and suppresses the immune system. Engage in your favorite form of relaxation daily such as, walking, reading, meditation, or visualization to enhance your immune system.
- Exercise Regularly: Thirty to forty-five minutes of moderate exercise at least three times per week has been shown to increase white blood cell activity, which will help fight viral infections.
- Be Positive and Don’t Forget to Laugh: Numerous studies have demonstrated that laughter and a positive emotional state can enhance the immune system

- Be sure that you are in a warm, quite space and sitting or lying down comfortably. Wash your hands and trim your fingernails.
- Locate the acupressure points specifically for insomnia and restlessness. Both are located on the inner wrist. The first can be found in the middle of the inner side of the forearm, two inches from the wrist crease. The second is located on the inside of the wrist crease, in line with the little finger. (See diagram below).
- Place your thumb or 2nd and 3rd fingers over each acupressure point and apply steady pressure for one to three minutes. If your fingers or hand begin to tense, lighten the pressure. Apply pressure one acupressure point at a time.
- Breathe gently and deeply from you abdomen as you apply pressure. You may feel a slight tenderness or sensation of dullness at the acupressure point. This is normal.
